Subject Selection in Years 9–12: Adding, Changing & Dropping Subjects
“Six subjects in Year 11, five in Year 12” is not a national rule. The useful starting point is to check certificate, ATAR and university requirements separately.

New South Wales: HSC, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The Higher School Certificate is NSW’s senior secondary qualification. Students generally progress from Preliminary courses in Year 11 to HSC courses in Year 12. Many schools begin HSC coursework in Term 4 of Year 11; confirm the actual sequence in the school’s program.

Victoria: VCE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
You will usually work towards the VCE over two years. Units 1–2 commonly correspond to Year 11 and Units 3–4 to Year 12, with acceleration possible. The VCE Vocational Major is an applied and vocational pathway, not the same as the scored-VCE route to an ATAR.

Queensland: QCE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The starting point is a simple distinction: the QCE is your qualification, while the ATAR is a rank calculated by QTAC. Programs may combine General subjects, Applied subjects and VET, but learning that earns QCE credit does not necessarily contribute in the same way to an ATAR.

Western Australia: WACE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The WACE can combine ATAR courses, General courses and VET. TISC calculates the university-admission ATAR. You can complete the WACE without necessarily qualifying for an ATAR.

South Australia: SACE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The SACE is built from Stage 1 and Stage 2 learning. Ten credits normally represent a semester and twenty a full-year subject. The word “credit” does not mean the same thing as another state’s “unit”, so a direct numerical comparison with NSW’s ten-unit pattern would be misleading.

Northern Territory: NTCET, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The NTCET uses SACE subjects and assessment infrastructure, but is a distinct territory qualification. The compulsory subjects are not exactly the same as in South Australia, though. Use an NTCET checklist rather than copying a SACE one.

Tasmania: TCE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The TCE uses courses with complexity levels and credit-point values. Completion credits and course scores for tertiary entry serve different purposes. The “Level 3” in a course name describes its complexity. It does not mean Year 3 or the same thing as Units 3–4 in another state.

Australian Capital Territory: ACT SSC, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The ACT Senior Secondary Certificate uses continuous school-based assessment rather than an HSC-style set of final subject examinations for everyone. University applicants need the Tertiary package in addition to certificate completion.
