Tasmania: TCE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The TCE uses courses with complexity levels and credit-point values. Completion credits and course scores for tertiary entry serve different purposes. The “Level 3” in a course name describes its complexity. It does not mean Year 3 or the same thing as Units 3–4 in another state.

Certificate requirements
The participation and achievement standard requires 120 credit points, including at least 80 at Level 2 or above. The credits are only part of the picture: everyday adult literacy, numeracy and ICT standards also apply. ATAR eligibility adds TCE attainment and the relevant Level 3/4 course requirements.
Subjects, school assessment and external assessment
School assessment is combined with external assessment in many Level 3/4 courses. Consult each course document for written, oral, practical or folio requirements. The number of school tests is not fixed across every subject statewide.
Which results contribute to the ATAR?
The TE score first uses the best eligible 45 credit points from the final year, then up to 30 additional points from that year and/or one other year. The 75-point maximum often resembles five 15-credit courses, but ATAR eligibility and the maximum aggregate are separate questions, and recognised university-study arrangements may differ. Unlike the usual NSW pattern, your Year 11 results can count too.
Changing subjects between Years 11 and 12
Build a program across English, mathematics, sciences, humanities, languages, arts and vocational learning that satisfies both TCE standards and tertiary entry. Before dropping a Year 12 course, check that you can still supply the required 45-credit contribution from your final year.
What to keep handy
- The current school course handbook, assessment schedules and official enrolment list.
- Separate certificate/ATAR eligibility audits, course-prerequisite records and any language-eligibility approvals.
