About the Tutor
As a bilingual tutor familiar with both Australian and Japanese education, I have taught more than 150 students from primary through high school, including group classes.

William Michihiko Akiyama
Growing up in Sydney, I graduated from James Ruse Agricultural High School (Top-ranked school in Australia at time of graduation) with an ATAR of 99.65. I then studied Mechanical Engineering at Keio University and am currently pursuing Aerospace Engineering at the University of Tokyo Graduate School.
Having experienced both systems firsthand, I understand the challenges Japanese-background students can face in Australian schools. Support ranges from primary English, Mathematics and selective-entry preparation to senior subjects, state assessment, ATAR and post-school pathways.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe in being both rigorous and supportive, tailoring my approach to each student's goals and challenges. I never let confusion go unaddressed, and I value the process of transforming uncertainty into confidence.

Why Japanese-Background Students Can Struggle in Australian Schools
Language and subject understanding
Conversational English does not automatically provide the academic language needed for comprehension, word problems and essays.
Hidden gaps in the foundations
Small misunderstandings in primary school can become much larger as subjects grow more complex.
Greater independence
Students are often expected to organise assignments, revision and assessment priorities themselves.
Different systems by state
Selective entry, subject choice, senior certificates and ATAR arrangements vary across Australia.
Limited visibility for parents
Different school and assessment systems can make it difficult to judge what is secure and what still needs attention.
