Subject Selection in Years 9–12: Adding, Changing & Dropping Subjects
“Six subjects in Year 11, five in Year 12” is not a national rule. The useful starting point is to check certificate, ATAR and university requirements separately.

Years 9–10: retain breadth and check progression
Read the school handbook for core subjects, elective slots and one- versus two-year options. Languages, advanced mathematics and practical subjects may have progression or placement requirements. Choose with your interests in mind, while also looking ahead to what the next stage requires.
Year 11: work backwards from degree requirements
Match possible English, mathematics, science, humanities, language and arts subjects against university prerequisites. Similar mathematics names do not mean equivalent content or eligibility. Then look at the practical side: workload, assignments due at the same time, available support and whether the timetable works.
Thinking of dropping a subject? Check these three things
| Check | Question for the school |
|---|---|
| Certificate | Will units/credits, English, breadth and achievement requirements still be met? |
| ATAR | Will eligible subject counts, combinations and counting restrictions be satisfied? |
| University | Will prerequisites, minimum subject results and scholarship conditions remain intact? |

NSW students may be able to reduce from twelve Preliminary to ten HSC units, but ten units leave no spare results. In VCE a fifth or sixth subject can contribute increments, while ACT and Tasmania can draw on Year 11 achievement. A subject-dropping strategy that works in one state may not work in another.
When can you change subjects?
Changing a subject involves more than choosing a new one. School deadlines, prior learning, completed assessments, exam registration and external-provider cut-offs can all matter. Consult the senior curriculum coordinator and retain the approved enrolment list. Confirm that external Japanese study is formally recognised for certificate and ATAR purposes.
