How to Read University Course Requirements Beyond the ATAR
An ATAR figure is only part of a course page. Here is how to read prerequisites, assumed knowledge, minimum subject results, selection ranks and extra assessment.

Use the correct intake and applicant category
Read both the university’s official course page and its admissions-service listing. Record degree, campus, intake, domestic/international category and school-leaver status. Search results can lead to an old intake or a different campus. Check those details before using the page as your guide.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Prerequisite | A required subject/result or other entry condition |
| Assumed knowledge | Expected preparation, generally different from a formal prerequisite |
| Recommended studies | Recommended preparation |
| Lowest selection rank | A published historical entry statistic, not a future guarantee |
| Guaranteed entry | A scheme subject to all stated conditions and exclusions |

Record both subject and minimum result
Do not assume NSW Mathematics Advanced/Extension or VCE Methods/Specialist are interchangeable. Use the institution’s interstate equivalence table. For example, check Sydney’s current mathematics-prerequisite guidance for Advanced Computing rather than repeating an old claim that Extension 1 is the only route.
Additional selection and earlier deadlines
Admissions tests, interviews, portfolios, auditions and language evidence may have earlier cut-offs. By the time ATARs are released, some of these deadlines may already have passed. Where schooling spans countries, check whether an English exemption is actually automatic.
