NAPLAN, RoSA & Minimum Standards: What They Do—and Do Not—Measure
These names can blur together. Here is how learning assessments, school records, completion standards and university ranks differ.

NAPLAN is not a Year 12 university entrance exam
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9; secondary students encounter it in Years 7 and 9. It covers reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. The results do not add points to an ATAR. They help identify learning needs and show how schools and the wider system are doing.
The NSW RoSA is a record, not an exam
The Record of School Achievement documents eligible learning from Year 10 onwards, including for students leaving without an HSC. It is not a common “RoSA exam” taken by all Year 10 students. Think of it as the record of learning, rather than the assessment itself.
| Assessment | Scope and purpose | ATAR relationship |
|---|---|---|
| NAPLAN | National literacy/numeracy, Years 3/5/7/9 | No direct contribution |
| HSC minimum standard | NSW reading, writing and numeracy | Completion standard, not subject points |
| OLNA | WA demonstration of WACE literacy/numeracy standards | Separate from ATAR-course exams |
| GAT | Victoria assessment quality assurance | Not a separate subject increment |
| AST | ACT input to scaling | Relevant through scaling |

HSC minimum standard
NSW uses online reading, writing and numeracy tests at ACSF Level 3 or above. Testing can begin in Year 10; exemptions and reattempt rules apply. If you come across an older explanation about NAPLAN Band 8, it is not a guide to the current minimum-standard arrangements.
School-specific assessments still matter
Topic tests, semester examinations, trials and assignments differ by school and subject. Absence, illness/misadventure and adjustment applications have deadlines; keep assessment notices and contact the school promptly when circumstances affect a task.
