You will usually work towards the VCE over two years. Units 1–2 commonly correspond to Year 11 and Units 3–4 to Year 12, with acceleration possible. The VCE Vocational Major is an applied and vocational pathway, not the same as the scored-VCE route to an ATAR.

Certificate requirements

Standard VCE completion requires at least 16 satisfactory units: at least three English-group units, including a Unit 3–4 sequence, and at least three other Unit 3–4 sequences. It helps to keep the two results separate: S/N tells you about completion, while a study score compares achievement.

Subjects, school assessment and external assessment

Units 3–4 use School-assessed Coursework, School-assessed Tasks where applicable, and VCAA examinations. Study scores generally use a 50-point scale; school assessment is statistically moderated. The study design tells you how the assessments are weighted and which exams are involved. The GAT itself is not an extra subject score added to your ATAR.

Which results contribute to the ATAR?

VTAC combines the primary four scaled study scores, including an English-group study, with up to two permitted increments. A fifth and sixth scored study normally add ten per cent each, rather than counting in full like the primary four. Subject-group and mathematics counting restrictions also apply.

Changing subjects between Years 11 and 12

You may see schools offering around six studies in Year 11 and five in Year 12. That is a common program structure, not a compulsory statewide subject count. Plan Units 3–4 as sequences and check assumed prior learning, English and degree-specific study-score prerequisites before changing subjects.

What to keep handy

The current school course handbook, assessment schedules and official enrolment list.
Separate certificate/ATAR eligibility audits, course-prerequisite records and any language-eligibility approvals.
