Queensland: QCE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The starting point is a simple distinction: the QCE is your qualification, while the ATAR is a rank calculated by QTAC. Programs may combine General subjects, Applied subjects and VET, but learning that earns QCE credit does not necessarily contribute in the same way to an ATAR.

Certificate requirements
To earn the QCE, you need 20 credits in the required pattern and at the required standard. At least 12 must come from completed Core learning. Literacy and numeracy requirements apply. From the 2026 Year 12 graduating cohort, completion of an academic integrity course is also required.
Subjects, school assessment and external assessment
General subjects normally have three internal assessments and one external assessment in Units 3–4. External assessment contributes 50% in General mathematics and science subjects and normally 25% in other General subjects. Applied subjects use different arrangements. Read this as Queensland’s assessment system rather than importing an explanation of the NSW HSC. Internal results are not simply replaced by external-exam ranks.
Which results contribute to the ATAR?
The main patterns are five General subjects, or four General subjects plus one Applied subject or eligible Certificate III-or-higher VET qualification. Satisfactory completion of an eligible English subject is required, but English counts only if it is among the best five scaled results—unlike NSW’s compulsory English contribution.
Changing subjects between Years 11 and 12
Distinguish the role of General subjects across English, mathematics, science, humanities, languages and arts from Applied and VET options. If you are thinking of dropping a subject between Units 1–2 and 3–4, ask your school to check the whole picture: QCE credits, ATAR eligibility and degree prerequisites.
What to keep handy
- The current school course handbook, assessment schedules and official enrolment list.
- Separate certificate/ATAR eligibility audits, course-prerequisite records and any language-eligibility approvals.
