South Australia: SACE, Subjects, Assessment & ATAR
The SACE is built from Stage 1 and Stage 2 learning. Ten credits normally represent a semester and twenty a full-year subject. The word “credit” does not mean the same thing as another state’s “unit”, so a direct numerical comparison with NSW’s ten-unit pattern would be misleading.

Certificate requirements
Completion requires 200 credits, including literacy (20), numeracy (10), Exploring Identities and Futures (10), Activating Identities and Futures (10), and 60 further Stage 2 credits, with the required grades. If you have seen older guides referring to the Personal Learning Plan or Research Project, use the current EIF/AIF rules instead.
Subjects, school assessment and external assessment
Stage 1 is school assessed. Stage 2 generally combines 70% school assessment and 30% external assessment. External components may be examinations, investigations or performances; it is not simply a set of identical written exams at the end of the year.
Which results contribute to the ATAR?
SATAC calculates the university aggregate from the best eligible 90 Stage 2 credits: three 20-credit Tertiary Admissions Subjects plus a 30-credit flexible option. Not everything that counts towards the SACE is a TAS. Check the combination and counting rules against your actual subject list.
Changing subjects between Years 11 and 12
Programs draw on English, mathematics, science, humanities, languages, arts, technologies and VET. Before reducing your Year 12 load, check both certificate completion and the 90-credit ATAR pattern. Meeting one does not automatically settle the other. Language eligibility and prior mathematics learning need particular attention.
What to keep handy
- The current school course handbook, assessment schedules and official enrolment list.
- Separate certificate/ATAR eligibility audits, course-prerequisite records and any language-eligibility approvals.
Use the state comparison and subject selection guide to put this pathway in context.
