Japanese University Timelines: Private, National & Australian Graduation Dates
Broad seasonal patterns are a starting point. For a workable plan, you also need to know whether you can apply before graduation and when documents must arrive.

Entry year is not the application year
The year in the title can be confusing: an admission route labelled “2027 entry” may have applications and assessments during 2026. Where applications precede Australian Year 12 results, check expected-graduation eligibility and acceptance of predicted or earlier academic evidence. Plot April/September intakes separately from the Australian year-end.
| Institution / route | Application | Subsequent stages |
|---|---|---|
| Keio returnee 2026/2027 | Web: 3–14 July 2026; mailed documents arrive by 15 July | Faculty-specific stages; economics second stage on 2 September as one example |
| Waseda PSE Global 2027 | 10–17 July 2026 | First stage 6 September; second 27 September; final decision 1 October |
| UTokyo foreign-school graduates, category 2, 2027 | Web: 22 October–17:00, 13 November 2026; postal arrival 9–13 November by 17:00 | Essays 25 February; stream-specific tests 25–26 February; interview 4 March; final result 10 March 2027 |

Seasonal patterns are only an initial planning aid
Some private returnee routes open around July and select in summer/autumn, while some national special selections run from autumn applications into winter/spring assessment. Public universities, English-taught programs and comprehensive routes can differ. Use the pattern to get organised, not to guess a deadline. The dates for this cycle also cannot simply be carried over to the next intake.
If travel overlaps Australian examinations
Compare school tasks, trials and state exams with Japanese selection dates. Do not assume an HSC or other state exam can be taken in Japan: obtain advance approval from the school and authority for availability, deadlines and centres. Enrolment payments in Japan may precede Australian offers.
A backwards-planning checklist
- Record permitted test windows, direct-score deadlines and retest opportunities.
- Start eligibility enquiries, references and certification before the online application opens.
- Check time zones and whether the deadline means arrival or postmark.
For UTokyo Category 2, English tests must fall in the specified 1 November 2024–31 October 2026 window, with electronic score-arrival requirements as well. The 25 January first-stage date is dispatch, not guaranteed delivery. See the detailed timeline and stream-specific tests.
