From an Australian High School to Japan: Returnee & Comprehensive Selection
Does attending high school in Australia make you eligible for returnee admission? It depends on the university, faculty and route—there is no single nationwide rule.

Returnee admission and comprehensive selection are not synonyms
Returnee routes specify overseas-study or related eligibility. Comprehensive selection evaluates motivation, educational background, aptitude and other evidence, but is not inherently reserved for returnees. Separate Japanese-taught, English-taught and international-student routes. Living in Australia is therefore not enough, on its own, to establish eligibility.
Changes must be checked faculty by faculty
Waseda’s School of Political Science and Economics runs Global (Overseas Study Experience) admissions, renamed from its returnee route for 2021 entry. That does not mean Waseda has abolished returnee admission across the university. Keio separately announces suspension of its returnee route for Policy Management and Environment and Information Studies from the 2026/2027 cycle; other faculties must be checked independently.
Eligibility to verify first
- Recognition of twelve-year schooling/qualification and actual or expected graduation date.
- Required years, continuity and levels of overseas study, return date and school type.
- Nationality/residence status and treatment of transfers or schooling in Japan.
- Required academic/language tests, transcripts and Japanese writing/interviews.
Building a university shortlist
Waseda, Keio, Sophia, ICU and the University of Tokyo are examples for an initial comparison, rather than a ranking of popularity. Narrow options by discipline, language of instruction, eligibility, intake, cost and future professional/study plans. Strong English does not eliminate Japanese writing or subject-exam demands in Japanese-taught degrees.
Documents to request from school
Discuss transcripts, enrolment and graduation evidence, grading scales, school profiles and references early. Check signatures, sealed envelopes, direct delivery, translations and certification; some documents need more than an upload by the applicant.
See the UTokyo Category 2 guide for 2027 for the returnee route. It includes Japanese essays/interview and stream-specific academic tests, rather than selecting on English proficiency alone.
