Scope: Category 2 for April 2027 entry
The route covered here is Category 2, for returnee students. Applicants must hold Japanese nationality or Japanese permanent residence both when applying and on entry. Category 1 is a separate privately financed international-student route with different conditions; living abroad does not, by itself, tell you which category applies.
Eligibility: qualification dates and overseas schooling
The basic qualification must first be obtained between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2027. Applicants need one of the listed qualification routes, such as completion or expected completion of recognised twelve-year schooling abroad. International schools abroad have accreditation conditions; graduates of overseas educational institutions designated by Japan’s education minister as equivalent to Japanese high schools are excluded under this route (pp.13–14).
- One route requires at least two continuous years, including the final year, at the final school of the foreign twelve-year system while residing abroad, followed by completion.
- Alternatively, the guide specifies at least five years at that final school while residing abroad within the six consecutive years counted back from and including the final year—not simply five years abroad over a lifetime.
- The university assesses substantive equivalence where school holidays produce shorter documented periods. If transfers or different school structures make your case unclear, this summary is not enough to decide eligibility; the university needs to assess it.
The guide lists 18 September 2026 as the enquiry deadline for unclear eligibility. That deadline has already passed at the time of this review. It is specific to this cycle, not a date to reuse next year. If your eligibility is still unclear, contact the Admissions Office yourself.
English tests: the exact testing window and score delivery
For Category 2, the explicitly stated test window is 1 November 2024–31 October 2026 (p.19). Use these dates rather than calculating a different window from the general wording about the two years before applications. TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic is required; TOEFL Home Edition is accepted. TOEFL uses Test Date scores rather than MyBest, and IELTS One Skill Retake is not used (p.14).
Scores must be sent electronically by the testing organisation and arrive by the application deadline, with evidence of delivery arrangements as specified. The guide recommends leaving about a month, so this is not something to leave until the last moment. The Category 2 rules reviewed here do not give a universal numerical minimum. That is not the same as saying a low score would be competitive. Check current application instructions for reporting details, including the revised TOEFL scale (pp.18–19).

Finishing the online form is only part of the application. You also need to mail the printed documents and pay the examination fee. The guide instructs applicants to contact the office if the first-stage notice has not arrived by 1 February. Second-stage assessment takes place at Hongo Campus, with details supplied to first-stage successful applicants (pp.15–16, 22–24).

Overall decision
You have 150 minutes for two essay questions: the first is answered in Japanese, the second in a permitted language declared at application. Options are English, German, French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Korean and Arabic. The individual interview is in Japanese (pp.21–22).
| Stream | Date / duration | Subject |
|---|---|---|
| Humanities streams | 26 February, 14:00–16:00; 120 minutes | One pre-declared language: English, German, French or Chinese. English includes about 30 minutes of listening |
| Science streams: mathematics | 25 February, 14:00–16:30; 150 minutes | Mathematics I/II/III/A, specified B topics (sequences, statistical inference), C topics (vectors, plane curves, complex plane); answer four of six questions |
| Science streams: sciences | 26 February, 09:30–12:00; 150 minutes | Two pre-declared subjects from physics, chemistry, biology and earth science, including their basic components |

English candidates also have a limited option to replace part of the paper with another specified language. Academic tests use general-selection papers, with differences such as the mathematics question choice; using the same papers does not mean the general-selection cut-offs apply in the same way. The overall decision also takes the first-stage result into account (p.22).
Documents from an Australian school and application restrictions
- Prepare the Japanese statement, normally three years of high-school transcripts, graduation/expected-graduation evidence and the prescribed recommendation, checking original/certified/translated-document rules and exceptions (pp.17–18).
- National/standardised examination results are listed as optional submission, with participation encouraged where such exams exist. Clarify treatment and any later submission of HSC/VCE results and ATAR with the university; do not invent an ATAR admission threshold (pp.19–20).
- Apply to one of the six streams. Restrictions apply to concurrent applications to UTokyo general selection (first schedule) or UTokyo College of Design; see p.1, including the exception for an ineligible-qualification determination.
Published figures: Category 2 applicants and final successful applicants
| Entry year | Applicants | Final successful applicants | Successful / applicants |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 67 | 17 | About 25.4% |
| 2025 | 56 | 14 | 25.0% |
| 2026 | 72 | 17 | About 23.6% |

These historical proportions cover Category 2 only, not Category 1. Streams differ substantially and each recruits a small unspecified number. The denominator is all applicants, not only those passing stage one. They tell you about past applicant groups, not your personal chance of admission. They also do not tell you enrolment numbers or an unpublished minimum score.
