What does TOEFL iBT measure?
TOEFL iBT is a computer-based test of Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking for academic and campus settings. It is widely used in Japanese returnee, comprehensive and English-medium admissions, but each program decides whether it accepts Home Edition, MyBest scores and the old or new scale. Check the exact admission route before booking.
The format from 21 January 2026
| Section | Main task types | Approximate base time |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Complete the Words, daily-life texts and academic passages | 50 items, 30 minutes |
| Listening | Responses, conversations, announcements and academic talks | 47 items, 29 minutes |
| Writing | Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Academic Discussion | 12 items, 23 minutes |
| Speaking | Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview | 11 items, 8 minutes |

Allow about two hours, excluding some directions. Reading and Listening adapt to the test taker, so actual item counts and time may vary slightly. There is no scheduled break. Speaking and Writing use a combination of automated scoring and certified raters.
The 1–6 scale and the former 0–120 scale
Tests from 21 January 2026 report each section and the overall result on a 1–6 scale in half bands. The overall is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band. Through January 2028, reports also include a comparable overall estimate on the former 0–120 scale. Follow the official report and university instructions rather than inventing a conversion.
| New scale | Comparable former total | CEFR |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0 | 72+ | B2 |
| 4.5 | 86+ | B2 |
| 5.0 | 95+ | C1 |
| 5.5 | 107+ | C1 |
| 6.0 | 114+ | C2 |

Cost, dates and testing in Sydney
As checked in October 2026, the base TOEFL iBT fee for Australia is US$293, before any applicable tax. Express registration within seven days costs US$49, rescheduling US$69, and each additional score report US$29. Fees can change, so confirm the final Australia price in ETS before payment.
Dates are offered regularly. Search Sydney in the ETS account to see authorised centres with seats for the chosen date; a static centre list becomes inaccurate as venues change. Home Edition is available, but some Japanese programs do not accept it. A test-centre sitting generally preserves the widest range of options when applying to several institutions.
- 01
Check accepted formats and test-date windows for each admission route
- 02
Create an ETS account using the exact name on the ID
- 03
Choose a Sydney centre and date, and add included score recipients if appropriate
- 04
Use official practice to learn the new tasks and microphone workflow
- 05
Aim for a first sitting two to three months before the earliest deadline
What score should applicants to Japan aim for?
| Institution / route | Published position |
|---|---|
| ICU ELBA 2027 | Minimum 4.5, or 79 on the former scale |
| ICU ELBA from 2028 | Minimum 5.0, or 95 on the former scale; exemption rules apply for certain English-medium backgrounds |
| Waseda SILS | No application minimum; official data describe 5.0 / former 95+ as competitive |
| Keio PEARL | Submission required but no cut-off; holistic review also includes SAT or IB and other materials |
Scroll horizontally to view the table.
For planning, 4.5 / the former 80s opens more submission possibilities, around 5.0 / former 95 is a useful target for competitive English-medium routes, and 5.5 / former 107+ is strong evidence of English proficiency. None guarantees admission. Japanese essays, school results, SAT, interviews and activities may be equally or more important depending on the route.
Preparation priorities
- Take one official diagnostic and separate the starting point by skill.
- Learn the new adaptive Reading and Listening tasks and verbalise why an answer is supported.
- For Writing, organise ideas for the task and write clearly under time, not only accurately.
- For Speaking, practise processing what you hear and responding clearly at a natural pace rather than memorising scripts.
- Before planning retakes, check whether the institution accepts MyBest or only a single sitting.
