Digital SAT Guide: Fees, Dates, Sydney Centres & Japanese University Targets
The digital SAT is a two-section, 2-hour-14-minute adaptive test. This guide covers international fees, finding a Sydney centre and how Japanese universities use the score.

What is the SAT used for?
The SAT is a standardised admissions test associated with US universities, but it is also used by some English-medium, returnee and comprehensive routes in Japan. It measures Reading and Writing plus Math; it is not simply an English proficiency test. Programs such as Keio PEARL require SAT or IB alongside TOEFL or IELTS.
Digital SAT structure
| Section | Questions | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 54 | 64 minutes, two 32-minute modules | 200–800 |
| Math | 44 | 70 minutes, two 35-minute modules | 200–800 |
| Total | 98 | 2 hours 14 minutes plus a 10-minute break | 400–1600 |

Each section has two modules. Performance in the first influences the difficulty mix in the second. Most Math questions are multiple choice, with some student-produced responses. The test runs in Bluebook, with the built-in Desmos calculator available throughout Math. Students bring an approved device or request a loan by the earlier deadline.
Fees and 2026–27 dates
International registration is US$68 plus a US$43 international fee, for a base total of US$111. Selected centres add US$24. Late registration is US$38 and changing a test centre US$34. Four score reports are free if ordered within nine days after the test; additional reports are US$15 each.
| Test date | Regular deadline |
|---|---|
| 5 December 2026 | 20 November 2026 |
| 6 March 2027 | 19 February 2027 |
| 1 May 2027 | 16 April 2027 |
| 5 June 2027 | 21 May 2027 |

Sydney test centres are shown by date in College Board’s Test Center Search and registration flow. Centres can change and fill, so use the live search rather than relying on an old school name in an article. Work backwards from the Japanese application deadline, including score release and delivery, and book early.
How to think about SAT targets for Japan
| Institution / route | Published position |
|---|---|
| Waseda SILS | No minimum; the published average SAT among successful applicants is 1452 |
| Keio PEARL 2027 | SAT or IB is required; no SAT cut-off. ACT is no longer accepted from September 2027 entry |
| Sophia FLA | Submit SAT, ACT, IB or GCE A Level, plus separate proof of English where required |

For planning, the 1300s can broaden options, 1400+ is a sensible competitive goal for demanding English-medium routes, and 1450–1500+ is strong academic evidence. But SILS’s 1452 is an admitted-student average, not a minimum, and PEARL has no cut-off. Australian school results, essays, activities and English proficiency are reviewed alongside the SAT.
How to prepare
- 01
Take an official Bluebook practice test to establish a baseline and pacing
- 02
Analyse errors by domain and separate knowledge gaps from decision speed
- 03
Use the official Question Bank and Khan Academy for targeted practice
- 04
Use a second official test to check improvement and stamina
- 05
Sit early enough for the application and a retake if needed
- Reading and Writing uses one question per short passage; practise grammar, rhetoric and information synthesis as well as comprehension.
- Desmos does not replace mathematical modelling; practise when to calculate directly and when a graph is efficient.
- Because the test is adaptive, do not waste time guessing which second module you received; focus on the current item.
