For university admission, check that Academic is required
IELTS is offered as Academic and General Training. University admission normally specifies IELTS Academic. Listening and Speaking are shared, while Reading and Writing differ. Confirm the program wording before booking so you do not select General Training by mistake. Some universities reject IELTS Online or One Skill Retake.
Test structure and timing
| Section | What it includes | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 4 parts and 40 questions across social and academic settings | About 30 minutes |
| Academic Reading | 3 long texts and 40 questions | 60 minutes |
| Academic Writing | Task 1 describes visual information; Task 2 responds to an issue | 60 minutes |
| Speaking | A three-part interview with an examiner | 11–14 minutes |

The test takes about 2 hours 45 minutes. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken together without a break; Speaking may be on the same day or around it depending on the centre. The overall Academic band averages the four skills and rounds under IELTS rules. Universities may also require minimum component bands, such as no skill below 6.0.
Fees and Sydney test centres
In 2026, IELTS Academic in Australia generally costs A$490, the same as General Training, with no separate registration or late fee for a normal booking. One Skill Retake is A$310 and an Enquiry on Results A$240. Regional locations and specialist products can differ.
As of 29 October 2026, IDP lists its Sydney CBD centre as temporarily closed, while the live booking page shows many sessions in Parramatta and Kensington. Locations can reopen or change, so use the official Sydney search at booking and check whether Writing is offered on computer or paper.
Results and when to test
IELTS on computer results are generally available in 1–5 days, but electronic delivery and university processing take additional time. Aim for a first attempt two to three months before the deadline so there is room to retest and send results.
Reading IELTS bands for Japanese applications
| Institution / route | Published position |
|---|---|
| ICU ELBA 2027 | Overall 6.5 minimum |
| ICU ELBA from 2028 | Overall 7.0 minimum; exemption rules apply for certain English-medium backgrounds |
| Waseda SILS | No minimum; official data describe 7.0+ as competitive |
| Keio PEARL | Submission required but no cut-off; One Skill Retake is not accepted |

For planning, 6.5 is a useful baseline across many English-medium routes, 7.0 a sensible competitive target for demanding programs, and 7.5+ strong evidence of proficiency. Program-specific component minima, accepted formats and validity always come first. In Japanese-medium returnee routes, essays or academic tests may carry more weight than IELTS.
Where preparation tends to matter most
- Reading includes all answer time within 60 minutes, so establish pacing by question type.
- Writing Task 2 carries greater weight; answer the exact question and give each paragraph a purpose rather than stacking memorised phrases.
- In Speaking, practise answering, explaining and extending naturally rather than chasing a perfect accent.
- Use official band descriptors to identify whether vocabulary, grammar, coherence or task response is blocking the next half band.
